Our History
The Chicago Korean Dance (CKD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the beauty and depth of Korean performing arts with the Korean-American community and the world at large. Founded on April 1, 2009, by artistic director Dr. Aedeok Lee alongside a group of professionally trained artists from Korea, CKD has grown into one of Chicago's most distinctive cultural voices.
시카고 한국무용단(Chicago Korean Dance, CKD)은 한국문화의 전문성과 전통을 살리기 위해 시카고 교민들 중 무용을 전공한 예술인들이 뜻을 모아, 전통무용가 이애덕 단장에 의해 창단된 비영리 문화단체이다. 2009년 4월 1일 창단식을 시작으로, 우리춤의 아름다움과 깊이를 교민 사회와 주류 사회, 나아가 전 세계에 전하는 것을 사명으로 삼아 활동해 왔다.
Repertoire
Over nearly two decades, the company has presented a rich body of work spanning traditional Korean dance and bold contemporary interpretations—always rooted in the authenticity of Korean cultural heritage while reaching toward new artistic horizons. Each original work reflects CKD's enduring commitment to both preservation and innovation.
창단 이후 근 20여 년에 걸쳐 무용단은 한국 전통무용의 원형을 충실히 계승하는 동시에, 전통을 기반으로 하는 창작무용을 꾸준히 선보이며 폭넓은 공연 활동을 이어왔다. 교민 사회에서 쉽게 접하기 어려웠던 수준 높은 우리춤을 무대에 올리며 주류 사회로부터 전문적이고 격조 있는 한국무용 단체라는 호평을 받아왔다.
Education Program
Beyond the stage, CKD invests deeply in education and community. CKD Youth stands at the heart of this effort, offering rigorous cultural training to nurture the next generation of Korean performing artists. The organization also provides programs for young children, adults, and drop-in participants, making Korean dance accessible and welcoming to all.
한국문화의 계승과 보급을 위한 교육 활동에도 힘써왔다. CKD Youth를 중심으로 차세대 교민 청소년들에게 체계적인 문화 교육을 제공하고 있으며, 유아·성인 대상 프로그램과 자유 참여 클래스를 운영하여 더 많은 교민들이 우리춤을 배우고 즐길 수 있는 기회를 마련하고 있다. 아울러 학교·박물관·문화기관 등을 찾아가는 아웃리치 공연을 통해 한국문화를 널리 알리는 데 앞장서고 있다.
International Performances
CKD further extends its reach through outreach performances at schools, museums, and cultural institutions, as well as international initiatives that champion Korean performing arts on a global stage. As a cultural ambassador for Korean dance, CKD has performed for corporations, cultural institutions, and public audiences alike—with notable appearances in New York and Italy. The organization has also been honored with official invitations from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chicago and overseas Korean embassies in Nicaragua, Brazil, and Norway.
Looking ahead, CKD remains committed to expanding its global presence—reimagining how Korean dance is experienced, shared, and celebrated across cultures and generations.
무용단은 일리노이주 비영리 문화단체로 등록되어 시카고의 문화 지형을 바꿔놓는 전문 한국문화 단체로 우뚝 올랐다. 주류 사회의 기업·기관·학교·박물관 등 다양한 무대에 초청받아 공연하였으며, 뉴욕과 이탈리아 현지 공연을 통해 특별한 주목을 받았다. 또한 주시카고 대한민국 총영사관의 공식 초청과 니카라과·브라질·노르웨이 주재 한국 대사관의 해외 초청공연에 참가하며 한국문화를 세계에 알리는 데 기여하였다.
앞으로도 시카고 한국무용단은 우리춤의 전통을 지키고 계승하는 사명을 이어가며, 문화와 세대를 아우르는 새로운 방식으로 한국무용이 경험되고 사랑받는 장을 열어나갈 것이다.
